Developing An Effective Content Strategy

Content strategy is the planning and development of your website based content.

In this respect, content is not only restricted to textual content but to all of the content on your site and content strategy requires planning how to add new content to your site and how to benefit from that content.

Search engines and human visitors both treat the content of your website as being extremely important and , so too, should you.

What Exactly Is Content Strategy?

Every website needs good quality content if it is to survive and even prosper online. Content ranges from the text that is featured on every page to video and other multimedia content.

As soon as a website goes live it needs high quality landing page content but it can also benefit from having a blog, regular articles, how-to guides, and other forms of content published on the site.

Why Do You Need A Content Strategy?

The regular addition of quality content can help drive new visitors to a website.

Fresh content can be used to bring visitors back to the pages of your site too. With a strategy in place it is possible to add regular content that excites, persuades, and converts.

Additional content allows you to target more keywords and it gives you greater scope for content marketing too, which can mean even more benefits and yet more traffic.

Defining The Purpose Of Your Content

All content should have a specific purpose. It should be informational and each new post, page, or entry should have a desired goal.

Content can be used to inform potential customers of products and their benefits. It can be used to relay a specific message or deliver a marketing message to those that read it.

Set your goals early in the strategizing process so that you stick to the plan throughout the publication and syndication process.

Content strategy

Content Types

There are many different types of content. In terms of text content, you should consider everything from e-commerce product descriptions to your blog, forum, and article directory as being a part of your strategy.

All of this content can be marketed to gain additional marketing benefit too. Reviews, how-to guides, blog posts, video reviews, and product image galleries are also a part of your content plan.

Also consider mobile content because more and more people are using their mobile devices, such as smartphones to access content.

Content Topics

Consider the topics that you will cover and include these in your strategy too.

Your website should be based on a particular topic and this is the obvious place to start but most sites transcend into other categories and topics too.

Your content should cover relevant topics so it is a good idea to have a list of these topics from the start.

Getting Visitors Involved

Getting website visitors involved can prove a highly beneficial tactic for your website.

It can also add to your overall content strategy to help provide you with even more great quality content while building an active community that has invested in your site and will continue to do so.

Encourage your readers to get involved in discussions, ask them to write reviews of your products, or even hold contests for the best photos of your products in use. This can prove a great way of starting a viral message too.

Developing Your Content Strategy

An effective content strategy can help you develop an efficient and effective website; a site that will get users involved and will encourage them to participate and make purchases on the pages of your site.

By adding content you will be able to attract more longtail search visitors and market the content to help attract visitors from many different sources.

Plan your content strategy before you start submitting and then consider the ways in which you can add fresh and unique content of various types.

  4. It’s definitely super important to have a content strategy. Unfortunately for me it’s not the strategy that’s my problem – it’s implementing it.

  7. Hi Matt,

Informative post. You have stated that we should encourage our readers to comment or interact. I, however, have some observations that I would like to state:

I have some posts, which are rarely commented on, but receive more organic traffic than some posts, which are more commented on. I would select the former because this means more revenue for me.

In this connection, as a blogger, would you rather go for the first or the latter? I’m interested to know your answer. Thanks.

  9. Hi Matt,
These days, everything is about content in blogging thanks to them Google updates. Since content is what basically drives new and return visitors alike to a weblog, bloggers definitely need strategies that will help turn their visitors into regular visitors, and definitely, this does not include any old recycled information. While trendsetting topics are good, they don’t necessarily last very long such as say the Oppa Gangnam Style.

  10. An effective content strategy is definitely the need of the hour. Thanks for providing a thoughtful insight on this niche.

  11. Thanks for the useful advice Matt, I remember how I struggled maintain a consistent posting schedule when I launched my blog…
I made the mistake to not prepare anything pre-launch and that kinda set me back with things.

Great post thanks for sharing, have a nice weekend, cheers.

  12. Hi Matt,

Having a well-versed content strategy really is an integral part of any website’s development and continued success. You mentioned a few comments above out Google’s latest updates proving more than ever that ‘content is king’ so it really is in blogger’s best interests to plan in advance in terms of what they’ll be presenting on their sites.

I find that having a strategy – especially one that involves certain keywords – not only allows you to stay on track and focused but, funnily enough, also gives you more creativity as you have to flex your mind in order to make keywords fit organically within content that is still relevant and which will be enjoyed by your readers! :)
