A friend of mine, Patrick, has spent the last 12 months working on a new website, getting all the content up on the site, doing some SEO and generally just trying to work out how it all fits together.
At the end of the day he’s doing it to make money so that he can give up his day job.
After 12 months he’s ended up with a lovely looking website, with a ton of content and around 100 visitors a day.
Personally I’d be rather disappointed with that level of traffic after that much effort especially as that traffic isn’t being converted to a meaningful currency in his bank account.
So I sat down with him the other day and went over some simple things he needs to be doing to try and make more money from his site.
Make the Most of What You’ve Got
My friend Patrick wanted to keep adding more and more content thinking that that was the only way to get more visitors and make more money. But he’s very wrong.
In fact what he should be doing is making sure that he has maximized the earning potential from those 100 daily visitors first before he puts in any more effort in attracting more people to the site.
Improving conversions today will reap major rewards later on as traffic increases.
Patrick sells a digital product. At the moment he converts traffic at around 0.3%. Each sale nets him around $30.
So on 100 visitors he makes $9.
Let’s look at what would happen if Patrick could increase his conversion rate to 0.5%:
On 100 visitors he would now make $15.
Just that small increase in the conversion rate would yield an increase of $6 per day which equates to around $180 per month.
It may not sound like a huge increase but remember, this isn’t being achieved by attracting more visitors to the blog or increasing the price of the product, this is solely based on improving the process which people follow to buy the product.
Ways to Increase Conversions
In this blog post I wasn’t intending on going into actual conversion rate factors, it was more to make you aware that studying conversion rates is quite a simple and quick way to make more money from your website or blog….but I’ll give you some tips anyway!
Let’s take Patrick as an example again. The first thing we did was to improve his sales page a little. Make the headline more attractive and make the body more focused on benefits instead of features.
We added some proper client testimonials and made it all look slightly sharper and easier to read.
I also introduced him to the world of autoresponders (if you don’t know about these then you need to really look into this) to capture email addresses and set up routine emails that go out to subscribers.
We made a few other changes, such as the position of the capture form and buttons and that was it.
It took about three hours (well, we did argue quite a bit) and a week later conversions had hit 1.4%.
So now, on 100 visitors, net earnings are $42. Remember originally he was making $9 per day. Over the course of a month that’s an extra $990 in his pocket.
That’s an astonishing increase in earnings derived purely from optimizing the sale process on the website.
Still want more traffic to your website?
Traffic is great but effective conversion of traffic to money should be focus number 1.
Make the most of what you have now before you waste time doing other things. Everyone can make more money from their website or blog, you just need to focus in on it.

Hi Mike
you are totally right, conversion is the most important factor in making money online, it’s even more important, than traffic.
What’s more, almost all people are concerning on getting traffic, not on improving conversion.

Thanks Chris. We’ve all been there though, we can get obsessed with increasing traffic instead of just concentrating on making the most of what we’ve got. Some of my best sites have low traffic levels but convert incredibly well and so make decent money…and at the end of the day that’s what counts.
Hey Mike,
I concur, the headlines that you use can make a difference in how well your offer converts. Tweeking your page actively can be a better use of time compared to just trying to get more people looking at your offer.

And the obvious benefit is that you can make changes to conversion rates very quickly that have an immediate impact, instead of waiting for Google to feature your website higher in the search results in order to send you more traffic. It’s a quick profitable fix that so many people overlook.
Hey Mike Superb tips you have mentioned here. I am agree with you that writing daily article doesn’t matter at all. We should try to convert traffic to subscriber then only we can convert them to sale.
BTW Thanks for this article.

Thanks Amit and glad you liked the article.
Nice article Mike and I fully agree that improving the conversion rate can make a whole lot of difference since even by just improving your conversion from 1% to 2%, you are able to squeeze in an extra sale which adds up over time.

And that’s the key as changes made today will mean increased sales from increased traffic going forward.
Traffic or conversions? The sexy answer is traffic. It is easy to blog about the sources of traffic and how to get more visitors. But, if you have a 0% conversion rate….traffic is of no use!
