Caution: Don’t Make these Common Twitter Mistakes

Twitter can be a tremendous marketing tool, but it can also be a marketing minefield, especially for those new to social media.

It’s important to ensure your brand’s tweets differentiate themselves from the competition.

Twitter marketing blunders are regrettably much too frequent, and could be very costly.

Tweeting Volume

Many followers routinely follow a large number of people and companies. That makes it very likely that your tweets will go unnoticed. Conversely, many of your followers only follow a tiny number of Twitter feeds.

When you tweet excessively, you risk losing those followers. That’s particularly significant, due to the fact these are individuals who are most likely to read and act on your tweets.

Be cautious about your tweet volume and don’t tweet the identical content material twice.

Too Much about You

Sharing your information is fine, but the majority of your tweets should be about other people and businesses, news, etc.

When you share other useful information, you will ultimately benefit because you are building your reputation of being knowledgeable and a source of valuable information.

Wasting Time

There is a clear danger in spending too much of your time and resources on this one marketing channel.

It’s important to use Twitter tools for scheduling, tweeting and information-gathering so that you don’t waste time hovering over your Twitter feed.

Neglecting to Help Others

You’ll appeal to and keep faithful followers when you participate in dialogue and aid others. This implies responding to inquiries, making use of @replies and retweeting other people’s content.

For example, if you are promoting DC Web Design, position yourself as an expert and source of information on web design by getting actively involved in the web design conversations.

Twitter Tips

An Unbalanced Follower Ratio

The number of followers is often the most heavily monitored Twitter statistic. The volume of followers is important for sure.

The more followers you have, the greater the number of opportunities you have to share your content and increase your Twitter presence.

However, it also pays to be aware of your follower-to-following ratio. Potential followers look at those numbers when deciding who to follow and who not to follow. If there is too much of a discrepancy, it can turn traffic away.

No Customer Service

If you have a brand presence on Twitter, make the effort to monitor customer comments, complaints and questions and respond accordingly. Twitter is frequently the preferred method of contacting a company in this current social media-infused climate.

Not Being Clear about your Audience

Ambiguous goals lead to ineffective marketing and wasting valuable resources. Know who your target audience is, direct your tweets to them and address their most common needs.

Twitter is no different from other, more traditional forms of marketing. Defined market demographics and a very clear and consistent message lead to efficient and profitable results.

Twitter mistakes can be a tremendous misuse of necessary company time and talent. Even worse, these common mistakes can lead to brand dissatisfaction and a damaged reputation in the marketplace.

Before wading into the Twitter sphere, be sure to do your homework and make an appropriate plan.

Now that you’ve gotten more information about how to use Twitter to effectively market your company, whether it’s DC Web Design or designer handbags, your next step should probably be to learn more about Facebook.

  1. Hi James, great post. I’m on Twitter since 3 weeks and totally agree with these points.

  2. The only one I’m guilty of is Tweet Volume. My feed can be kinda busy. I don’t repeat the same tweet in the same hour—that’s for sure, and most of the time I don’t repeat it in the same day. When I’m running a special post on the blog, I may tweet about it once an hour or several times in quick succession but not both.

I may have lost a few followers from it, but I get a lot of graditude tweets and retweets as well, so I’m happy with the current situation. Keeping the volume in mind, though, is a good reminder. Thanks.

    • Hi Mark,
I think the people interested in your feeds, do not care about its volume, if the content is enough appealing.
And I also agree that a special post or an important article in your blog, should be highlighted in anyway.

  3. Hey James Nice point. I always love Twitter and for me its better then Facebook ;)
BTW Thankf for thanks for this post.

    • Also for me works better Twitter than Facebook.
I think it depends from the topics on your site, Amit.

  5. Great advice James, I think follower ratio usually makes a huge difference, it can send off signals as if a twitter profile is spammy. Best practices to maintain a good ratio!

    Thanks again!

  6. James, somehow this post invites to read. You nailed it, thanks. Unfortunately some bloggers with large following do not follow all you said, which I find annoying.

e.a. now warning the audience when they tweet an old post. Or just retweeting stuff as it comes from themselves.

    Best regards,

    Tom

    • A catchy title attract more readers, but the important part after this, is the content of the post!
I usually pick random old articles in my blog and I promote them via Twitter.
If you put a lot of efforts in writing good quality posts, it is a shame not to reintroduce them also in future.
      Thanks for your comment, Tom.
