10 SEO Tips to Optimize Your Content ( Learn SEO basic rules )

You need to be able to optimize your content and apply some SEO rules, if you want to be at the top position in Google SERPs.

Each webmaster wants to have more organic traffic, and it is a truth that any blogger has personally experienced many times troubles with ups and downs of its position in the search engines.

Below you may want to read a list of ten tips on how to create content that has an excellent search engine optimization.

Applying these tips to your content, will allow you to gain significant benefits in terms of rankings on Google and, more generally, on all the search engines, such for istance Ping, Yahoo or Altavista.

Be sure to check these advices on how to create well-optimized web content.

1 . Optimize the Content for a Single Keyword

To obtain good results in the ranking of your web content, the most effective thing is to optimize content for one keyword.

If you have more than one keyword, at least follow this strategy : focus on one primary keyword per page or post.

So, all your web content should be optimized for your keywords, the more relevant to your topic.

This choice of optimization does not mean that your content can not have secondary keywords, but on these you should not have too many expectations in terms of positioning.

This will be mostly useful for clarifying the context of the content to search engine spiders.

If you have ambitions for positioning your secondary keywords, it is better that you create web content optimized for this purpose.

2 . Enter Your Keywords Multiple Times in the Primary Content

Of course you do not want to exceed the number of times you will insert your keywords in the content.

However, it is no doubt that if you are creating a SEO optimized content, your primary keywords must be present in the body of the text, at least sometimes.

So be sure to not overdo it : the presence of keywords should not be forced, but natural.

What does this mean?

It means that your web content must be able to read without the user notices that have been optimized for SEO keywords (and in these weeks Google announced that soon will implement a penalty for “over optimized content”).

In other words, in any way avoids any temptation to keyword stuffing.

Your content should be primarly created for your Readers.

3 . Enter Your keywords in the Primary Titles and Subtitles

For an excellent search engine optimization of your web content, you obviously maximize the H1 tag.

This means that you should enter your primary keywords in H1 title.

Similarly, optimizes the subtitles H2 and H3 , in a way that they also contain your keywords.

4 . Put Your Primary Keywords in the First Words of Content

Your primary keywords should be included in the first words of your web content. This is to maximize the effect of the keyword prominence.

By how many words must be cited? I have heard the suggestions is within the first 10.

Some people say within the first 20-25 or even within the first 100.

I can not say who is right. But I am sure that the first you put it, the more effective will be the SEO optimization of your web content.

5 . Use Bold and Italics to Highlight Your Primary Keywords

Another way to optimize your web content is to make bold or italic the most important concepts. Obviously, this is also true for the primary keywords.

But do not overdo it.

Too much use of bold type can turn web content virtually unreadable.

The same concept is applied to the italic that, with respect to the bold, has the drawback of being difficult to read on the screen of your blog visitor.

6 . Use Your Primary Keyword as Anchor Text

The suggestion to insert internal links in the content of your blog is very important for positioning, also to increase the pageviews of your site and decrease the bounce rate.

So be sure to link together your pages and you will have more chance that your content will be well positioned in SERPs.

Of course you need also external links : links pointing to you by other sites. Among other things, they are very important to increase your website popularity.

You need to select as anchor text a portion of web content that contains your primary keywords.

7. Enter an Optimized Image

In any of your post, you should insert a SEO optimized image.

So, keep in mind what is your primary keyword, thus optimizing the image name, its title and its alt text.

Also check the weight of this image: he must be as low as possible, without undermining the quality of the image, in a way to have the fastest loading speed for your page.

10 SEO Tips to Optimize Your Content ( Learn SEO basic rules ) – Click to Tweet

If you want to optimize in SEO terms even more your image, pay attention to the portion of content that surrounds it : this should also  contain your primary keywords.

8 . Write Relevant Content for the Readers

Write relevant content for the readers, means write high quality content. It is essential.

When a search engine user makes a query and click on the result, he will arrive at the corresponding page on your site.

The content that he will find, should not disappoint him.

This is the same reason why Google is making all these changes in the last years, with the Panda Updates.

Google wants that its users have the most rewarding experience while using its search engine and while visiting the Web.

9. Optimize the Description Tag

The description tag may push on your content.

If written well, the tags can magnetize clicks from Google users and, therefore, induce the search engines to categorize your content as very relevant to the query type.

10. Optimize the URL of Your Post

It comes to writing a URL that summarizes the contents of the web page. In the URL you should enter the primary keywords for which you do the optimization.

Do you have any other suggestion or consideration ? Thanks !

  1. Thanks Erik. Useful tips.

  2. I’m doing most the stuff you mentioned. Let’s hope that doesn’t already count as “over optimization” with the new google update coming our way, promising to punish over optimized pages…

    • Hi Andy,

actually Google keep saying to focus on writing high quality content for our readers, not for the search engines.

But also the SEO steps, as mentioned above, are important to implement in our content.

Just take it easy, use the right quantity, do not abuse,
and I think we can do well.

  3. Erik,

You are right in your response to Andy, the focus needs to be on the human not the computer. More and more search engines are looking at relevancy rather than keywords. Gone are the days of keyword stuffing. With SEO getting harder and harder your content will soon be the only thing ranking you.

    • Hi Ryan,

I think that focusing on write content addressed to humans, will lead us not to worry about any future change of the Google algorithms,
      do not you think?

  4. Now that you mentioned tip number one, I remember seeing some sites that have a lot of keywords for a single page. It’s as if the owner’s trying to rank for all of those keywords, when he or she should know that it’s not going to work. In fact it will hurt a website even more. Just like what you’ve said in your reply to Andy, one should focus more on writing quality content that’s targeted on the readers rather than having the thought of being visible on the search results as your main purpose in having a website.

    • I completely agree, Gerald.

As I wrote in answer to Ryan,
we should focus and write content addressed to humans, so we do not have to worry for any future change of the Google algorithms, as we will have only benefits.

  5. Excellent advice but as others have pointed out, how much of this will be affective by Google’s new rules seems to be anyone’s guess. Have noticed some lessening of the rankings of my site since the February rules, even though my writing is addressed to humans, not algorithms.

    • Hi Leo,

have you checked the other factors of Google penalty?

For example, no ads above the fold?

      • What is “no ads above the fold?”

        • “Above the Fold” is the part of a website page that’s visible without scrolling down.

I see in your site that you have one ad just in the right sidebar, “above the fold”.

The “no ads above the fold” is just one of the last updates of Google Panda algorithms.

You may want to check all the updates of 2012 here :

I am modifying a big part of my very old posts,
in order to fit with new Google needs, to get my site rank better.

If you need any help, let me know.

          :-)

  6. People will talk about SEO=links. Yes, that is to. But…only when good content is a given!

It does become a bit tricky, trying to create good content/using keywords enough. I write my article first, and then search for positions where I can inject keywords.

I have not optimized my images, so that is the next thing for me to do.

    • Hi David,

I think that being able to write online and optimize the content is a thing well done just by experts.

With time I think we get better, we need to get informed and read a lot.

Image optimizationt was unknown to me until not long ago.

  7. isnt blogging all about focusing quality content and info as opposed to being visible on the search results

    • Hi Darwin,

there is no value to have a great content, but zero readers.

Unfortunately we all need SEO, to get our blog “started” and keep it active.

  8. AizzaMarie says:

There are actually a lot of seo blog that provide tips and advice that can help optimize the content of every post…Thank you for your help here…

    • Hi Marie,

we always need to learn, but not all blogs provide high quality content and useful, especially in the SEO industry.

They do look all “experts”, right? (Not me for sure).

  9. Danyelle Franciosa says:

Great SEO tips ahead and I learn a lot on it. SEO is noow very common and there are a lot of ways on how to do it quickly and productively.

    • Hi Danyelle,

we all know that SEO is a work that requires time, patience and persistence.

BUT then the results are solid.

  10. Good advice here. I think starting with picking your topic for your post should be the first step. It’s a little broader than finding a single word, but gives you more focus on a quality theme. After you pick the toin, then you can look at the topic and narrow that down for the keyword. Then when you write your post, you have your central topic in mind as well as your keyword. Overall, it makes for a better written post.

    • Hi Richard,

      good point.
Once you have the title of your post in mind,
you should also have the structure of the article and thus where to insert the proper keywords.

  11. Overall these points are valid, but….

Make sure to use several variations of your primary keyword in the page copy to sound natural to reader, instead of the same exact keyword/anchor text over and over.

These thematically relevant variations will establish more trust in both your single page theme, and overall domain quality.

  12. No SEO No rankings never a truer word said I do all mine its a grind but worth it in the end

  13. well done, Erik, now you’re really doing a great job with your blog, I’m sure this post will help a lot of new bloggers learning about SEO.

    Thanks so much

  14. Thanks again Erik, I so glad I discovered your blog. I am doing some of these SEO activities, but there is a lot more I could be doing to optimize my site. I am going to create a checklist from your article :-)

  15. Thank you for such an informative post! I knew a little about this but now I understand why these things are so important. I need to do more of my homework to be successful with blogging. This is an excellent start for me.

  16. Thanks for this post but I have a challenge because i do all the above mentioned tips but i still dont see the traffic.

Please what i’m i doing wrong?

    Thank you

  17. You can make all this setings using a plugin, it is very helpful. However, sometimes i prefer to do manually as you describe above-it is safely and a pleasant work.

    • Erik Emanuelli says:

      Yes, Steve, that’s right.
You can use SEO Pressor plugin or WordPress SEO by Yoast,
but it’s good to know these basic rules of online writing and optimization.
